Background: On August 19th 2021 the Multicultural Media & Correspondents Association (MMCA) partnered with STARZ Television to host the inaugural Media Diversity Excellence Awards Reception. The virtual event was held during the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) signature annual convention. The reception was designed to honor Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) media excellence and highlight the need for increased media diversity.
The honorees were Karine Jean-Pierre as the Newsmaker Award recipient and Trymaine Lee as the Impact Journalism Award recipient. Jean-Pierre is the White House principal deputy press secretary while Lee is a Pulitzer Prize and Emmy Award-winning journalist, MSNBC correspondent, and host of the podcast “Into America.” The reception also featured a moderated discussion with STARZ talent about the network’s #TakeTheLead initiative. The effort is Starz’s commitment to amplifying narratives by, about and for women and underrepresented audiences hoping that it will inspire others across the entertainment industry.
The conversation was moderated by NABJ Arts & Entertainment chair Kelley L. Carter, host of the “Another Act” show for ESPN’s The Undefeated. Panelists included talent from several popular Starz series: Patina Miller, “Raising Kanan”; Hailey Kilgore, “Raising Kanan”; Amber Stevens West, “Run The World”; Corbin Reid, “Run The World”; Ajiona Alexus, “BMF” and Michole Briana White, “BMF.”
Challenge: ElevateX™ Agency was hired by the MMCA to manage the custom branded graphic design aesthetic for the event. We were also responsible for all social media marketing, email marketing, website landing page development, digital registration, and the overall digital production for the entire event.
Our Solution: The ElevateX™ team graphic designed all of the marketing collateral, flyers, social media promotional cards, and drove public relations promotion with the help of the Elevate Dayton editorial team for the event. We also developed and pushed out branded mailchimp email marketing campaigns promoting the event to the MMCA’s 6,000+ email subscribers. We also managed the promotion of the event through strategic social media marketing campaigns across MMCA, STARZ, and NABJ’s Facebook, Linkedin, Instagram, and Twitter accounts.
